Amazon product videos: show what buyers need to know

An Amazon product video should answer questions that photos and descriptions leave open. Show how the item is used, which details matter and what the buyer actually receives. This is a different job from an ad: someone on the detail page is already looking at that particular product.

01

A detail-page video or an advertisement?

A product-detail video adds information about a specific item. An ad often has to establish the reason to care first. A detail-page film therefore does not need a long general brand introduction. Show the item on the listing early, together with the use someone is considering buying it for.

Agree the placement before production: product detail page, brand content or a particular ad placement. Those have different requirements and communication jobs. One production can supply material for several versions, but the order, duration and final message may change. The seller checks current requirements for their account and placement.

02

Which buyer question should the film answer?

Collect questions from customer support, reviews and sales conversations. Are people unsure about size, assembly, cleaning or the difference between variants? Choose questions that pictures can actually answer. A close view of a fitting, surface or control can be more useful than another line about premium quality.

For a portable lamp, the film might show how it switches on, how it sits on a table and where the charging port is. These are specific uses. Any technical copy must match the exact model being sold. A long feature list does not need to occupy the film when the same specifications are already clear on the page.

  • Item: which product revision and ASIN does the film cover?
  • Question: what do existing images leave unclear?
  • Use: which real sequence makes the benefit visible?
  • Contents: what is included and what is only part of the setting?
  • Assets: which photos, dimensions, models and approved statements exist?
THREE BUYER QUESTIONS

Recognise. Use. Inspect a detail.

An original lamp concept shows how an overall view, a use scene and a detail can form a useful product gallery.
03

Recognise, use and inspect the product

A useful sequence starts with a clear product view, moves into the main use and then gives important details enough room. That might mean a connector, fastening or difference between versions. This is not a required number of scenes; it is a starting point for a film that supports a purchase decision.

For a set, make the included items clear. A setting can explain the use without suggesting that extra accessories come in the box. Scale needs a reliable reference. If an animation reveals the inside, the construction must be correct. An attractive image only helps when it represents the item the customer will receive.

04

When do footage and 3D help?

Footage can show real handling, materials and scale directly. 3D offers controlled views, component sequences and product variants. Combining them may be useful when the film needs to show both use and a hidden detail. The choice depends on the item, available material and intended message.

Existing product photos are useful references, but they do not provide every possible angle. New 3D scenes may need dimensions, a model and packaging artwork. Real demonstrations need suitable footage. I first review what can be used and what needs producing. New filming should not appear silently inside a quote for animation.

05

Check upload requirements and product assignment

Amazon's German seller guide describes an upload area in Seller Central where sellers supply the title, ASINs and video type. Check which functions are available in your own account and the current file and content requirements for your marketplace. Account permissions and interfaces can differ, so do not assume every seller sees the same tools.

Before delivery, review the format, readability, item assignment and product statements together. The thumbnail should clearly represent the same item. Allow time for the platform review: an exported file is not a published video. Agree who handles the upload and account access as part of the project.

06

Turn a listing into a clear production scope

Send the product link, main buyer question and available assets. Include the placement, variants, deadline and budget. If the listing is not live, a description and images are enough to start. You do not need a finished script or a decision to make every scene in 3D.

I propose a focused sequence and identify the production work. The quote makes asset preparation, new visuals, animation, audio and delivered versions understandable. Other colours or related items can be planned together, but they are not automatically just another export. The first film's scope should remain clear before further products are added.

Common questions

Can I use an Instagram ad on an Amazon listing?

The material may help. A detail-page version should focus on the specific item and buyer questions. It may need a different opening, composition or ending, and must meet current requirements for the chosen Amazon placement.

Are existing product photos enough?

They are enough for an initial review. Whether they cover the finished scenes depends on quality, angles and the intended depiction. Any new 3D work or footage is identified in the quote after that review.

How can I tell whether the video helps buyers?

Define the buyer question it answers and observe relevant signals: fewer repeat questions, video use and purchases on the detail page. Compare similar periods or suitable test variants, while accounting for changes to the price, offer and traffic sources.
