Video ad variations: different approaches from one production

You need fresh video ads, but not every version needs a full production from scratch. Shared scenes can support different openings and selling points. Each variation should give viewers a different reason to care, rather than simply changing the look.

01

What makes an ad variation meaningfully different

One version opens with a problem, another with the product in use, and a third with a visible outcome. Each addresses a different reason to consider the product. A new background colour or soundtrack can suit the design, but it does not replace a different selling point.

This is useful when you already run ads and need fresh material for the same offer. For a first film, one clear approach may be enough. Plan variations around questions you actually need to answer: Is the situation recognisable? Is the feature compelling? Does the claim need a visible demonstration?

02

An example: three openings for a travel eSIM

The problem opening shows an arrival without mobile data. The use opening starts with setup before the trip. The outcome opening shows a working connection at the destination. Each can lead into the same clear product demonstration, provided that demonstration supports the opening.

This does not establish that one version will sell better. It creates three reasoned creative approaches. Decide whether you want to compare only the opening or entirely different messages. Those are different questions and call for different sets of variations.

Which scenes can share a production

The product model, interface, logo, core demonstration and parts of the sound design can often be developed together. A new opening can use those assets. A different customer problem may need new scenes; another language, offer or feature changes other parts of the film.

I separate shared work from the work needed for each version. Vertical and landscape deliveries need planning too. A different crop is not enough if it makes the text or interface hard to read. Shared production saves effort where the design and scenes genuinely work together.

  • The product and the specific offer
  • Two or three messages to explore
  • The shared demo and any new scenes
  • Required formats and placements
  • Who runs the campaign and reviews the results
04

Make the production scope clear

A brief for three variations should specify the openings, main sequences and end frames you need. Add the delivery formats, feedback rounds and available assets. Three openings with one shared demo require different work from three independent films.

The quote reflects that work rather than a flat discount per file. We can start with a main approach and selected variations. For ongoing work, each production round has an agreed scope and a list of changes. An unlimited supply of new ads is not automatically included.

05

Connect the production to the campaign test

Meta describes different messages, visuals and formats as elements of creative diversification. For production, that means making the approaches recognisably different. For evaluation, it means avoiding the assumption that a single edit explains every difference in performance.

Audience, offer, advertising budget and landing page also affect the outcome. Agree with the campaign owner which question the test should answer and what data it needs. I produce the agreed creative variations; account management and ongoing analysis are separate responsibilities. A film alone cannot establish a particular return on ad spend.

06

What to send for a variation plan

Send the product link, offer and any existing ads. Tell me the placements, production budget and deadline. If you have previous findings, specific observations help: a feature viewers misunderstand, for example, or an opening that does not make the situation clear.

I can suggest approaches and scenes that are useful across the versions. The quote lists the main film, variations, formats and feedback rounds. You can decide what to produce now and what to keep for a later round. You do not need a finished script or a fully developed test plan to get in touch.

Common questions

How many video ad variations do I need?

Enough to serve a clear purpose and fit the campaign's evaluation plan. Two or three distinct approaches can be a useful production starting point. Many almost identical versions do not automatically provide better information.

Do extra variations cost less than new films?

They can require less work when the product model, demo and design are reusable. New situations, features or main sequences need more production. The quote separates those elements.

Will you manage my advertising account?

My work covers the design and production of the agreed videos. Advertising spend, delivery and campaign analysis are separate. We can coordinate the files with your campaign owner or agency.

Three creative approaches
Arriving without data, setting up before departure, and connecting at the destination: three openings can lead to the same eSIM demo. The meaningful change is the selling point, not the background colour.
